A vote set for this week that would require truck traffic on city streets to obtain permits through the city of Houston has been delayed by the Houston City Council to allow for industry input. The proposed city ordinance would prohibit commercial motor vehicles to access city streets and roads without proper city permits.
Late last week, representatives with CEMEX alerted TMTA staff of the proposal after a meeting with ordinance supporter and Houston City Councilman Adrian Garcia and Houston Police Department senior police officer V.L. “Vince” Chavez.
Reports from that meeting reflect the councilman’s desire to act to combat the damage caused to Houston’s infrastructure by truck traffic. The Councilman claims that his draft ordinance sets up a permit and fee schedule that greatly mirrors current state law.
The issue was set for the agenda this week but has been delayed to allow interested parties to comment. TMTA has been in contact with effected stakeholders from the Greater Houston Partnership, Texas Manufacturing Association (TMA), Texas Aggregates and Concrete Association (TACA), Texas Chemical Council (TCC), CEMEX and Exxon as well as officials in the Mayor’s office. The issue is expected to be back on the agenda for next Wednesday; therefore we are requesting that you please take a moment to review the attached proposal and send your comments to Les Findeisen at les@tmta.com or John Esparza at john@tmta.com.
Deadline for comments is Friday, July 20th, 5:00PM.
